Paul didn’t need a Thanksgiving meal to remind him to share what he was thankful for. He does this in almost all of his letters, and it is always focused on people and God’s work of grace in and through them. In these familiar passages, Paul thanks the Lord for the Philippians’ partnership with him, not only financially but in all ways needed for the ministry of the gospel. He also encourages them with his confidence in God’s provision for them—again, not only materially, but also spiritually—by the grace of Christ and for the glory of his name. These passages provide a natural opportunity for any pastor to express his gratitude for and to encourage a congregation that has supported and partnered with him in the ministry of the gospel.
Passage: Philippians 1:1-4:20
