By the time he wrote 1 Timothy, Paul was a 30-year veteran of gospel ministry. He had served many tours of duty in many places, contending for the faith and repeatedly suffering near-fatal wounds. After laying a firm gospel foundation, he issued a veteran’s charge to Timothy that is applicable not only to church officers, but to every believer who wishes to grow in grace and make the Lord Jesus known.
