Romans 3:21–26 is a key text in understanding our own faith as well as the Protestant Reformation. Taking up Calvin's image of Romans as a portal to the whole of Scripture, it sets humanity's “idolatrous exchange” of God's truth for a lie against God's “gracious exchange” in Christ, by which sinners are justified freely by grace as a gift, received through faith. Propitiation is explained as both the satisfaction of divine justice and a change in God's disposition toward his people that issues in adoption, so that God is shown to be both just and the justifier.
