While excellent and praiseworthy, the description of the godly wife in Proverbs 31 frequently drives women to despair. Who can possibly live up to such a lofty standard in such a wide variety of areas? And what if you are not married (or are a man)? Does this portion of God’s Word have nothing to say to you? Thankfully, Proverbs 31 is not a to-do list for godliness but a concluding illustration of what the teaching of the entire book of Proverbs looks like in everyday life. The woman depicted is an ideal embodiment of wisdom, anticipating the glorious Savior who is wisdom incarnate and who invites us to walk in His way.
