After defeating Absalom’s rebellion and crushing his army, David was in a position to retaliate against those who had wickedly betrayed him. But God’s covenantal king remembered the grace he had been shown and offered mercy instead. He anticipated the far greater grace that his far greater son would show to far greater rebels, so that we, too, might show undeserved grace to others.
